Hardly a fair comparison is what most readers will think, and basically I agree. But my hobby has resulted in a huge level of respect for certain "budget" vintage or classic cameras that were once made with very good lenses. The Nikon L35AF has a 35mm f2.8 lens, the Yashica Auto Focus Motor-D has a 38mm f2.8 lens, while the Canonet QL17 G-III has a 40mm f1.7 lens. I think most folks visiting this page will agree the 3rd image from the Canonet is the best - it is the sharpest and clearest overall. But how far behind are the other two? The Nikon and Yashica are from the first generation of point and shoot auto focus cameras, and they don't fetch much on the used film camera market these days. But despite the fact that this generation of cameras was the beginning of the cheapening in some ways, the manufacturers were still putting fixed focal length lenses on their point and shoots and still relatively fast at f2.8.
I will confess though, that this comparison isn't entirely fair. The Nikon and Yashica images were shot back to back and processed back to back, while the Canonet image was taken days later under different lighting conditions. Feel free to contact me to leave your thoughts on this comparison, and I will try to post feedback to this page.
